WASHINGTON — National Council of Jewish Women CEO Sheila Katz released the following statement in response to baseless attacks on Adeel Mangi, who if confirmed would be the first Muslim American judge on our circuit courts:
“National Council of Jewish Women is proud to support Adeel Mangi, an outstanding nominee to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. Mr. Mangi represents the best of what a federal judge should be — he is fair, independent, and qualified — and his grace, temperament, and moral clarity are exactly what America needs on the federal bench.
“And yet Mr. Mangi has been the target of unfounded, Islamophobic attacks questioning his loyalty to America, accusing him of antisemitism, and whether he can be an impartial federal judge as a result of his faith. Those questioning him claim to bring these concerns on behalf of the Jewish community.
“Let us be clear: National Council of Jewish Women, a 130-year-old legacy civil rights organization, and the leading Jewish organization working on the federal courts, unequivocally denounce the Islamophobia attacks on Mr. Mangi and fully support his nomination.
“Adeel Mangi has devoted thousands of hours to pro bono service, filing numerous amicus briefs in the federal appellate courts and before the US Supreme Court on behalf of minority faith groups, working on behalf of the civil and human rights of all Americans. Along with his extensive professional experience, Mr. Mangi’s integrity and character would make him an ideal judge on the Third Circuit. National Council of Jewish Women advocates will continue to work with Leader Schumer (D-NY) to bring his vote to the Senate floor and urge every Senator to confirm this outstanding nominee without delay.”
