Preparing Your Heart for the High Holydays

Anticipation of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur involves more than buying new outfits or finding a large brisket for a big dinner crowd. We can get so much more out of this holiday season if we spiritually prepare, too.

During the Hebrew month of Elul, leading right up to Rosh Hashanah, the tradition is to practice the exercise of cheshbon nefesh, an accounting of one’s soul. We each ask ourselves: How is my spirit doing? Am I pleased with the choices that I have made during the past year? Are there shortcomings on which I want to work? What might I do to ensure that I am growing to be the mensch, the person, that I want to be?
