“Monster Markup” and Vote by Judiciary Committee Threatens Democracy Itself

Washington, DC, February 7, 2019 — In an unprecedented move, the Senate Judiciary Committee plans to force through 44 lifetime judicial nominations in one day. For good measure, they are including a vote to confirm William Barr, nominated to replace Jeff Sessions as the next attorney general. National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) CEO Nancy K. Kaufman issued the following statement:

“The ‘Monster Markup’ is the endgame of a ploy to disregard long-standing committee safeguards that ensure a fair and balanced federal bench. Former Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Grassley (R-IA) ignored blue slips from the nominees’ home state senators, held ‘stacked’ hearings that considered appellate court nominees in groups, thus truncating the ability of senators to query individual nominees, and disregarded negative ratings issued by the American Bar Association. The warped process even included unprecedented and furtive recess hearings in an underhanded effort to pack the courts with partisan ideologues, most of whom are ill-qualified or otherwise unfit. Senator Graham (R-SC) has shown within his first few weeks of serving as Chair of the Committee that he, like his predecessor, has no interest in a fair process or the integrity of the federal courts.  

“William Barr, the nominee for Attorney General who has criticized the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, also holds expansive views of executive power that would further sanction Trump’s efforts to cripple civil rights, including reproductive rights, and quash true religious freedom.

“NCJW urges the Judiciary Committee majority to recognize the terrible damage its approach to governing is doing to democratic processes and the public trust and agree to return to transparency and normal order.”
