WASHINGTON – As the counting of ballots continues throughout the country and no clear winner declared in the presidential election, National Council of Jewish Women CEO Sheila Katz released the following statement urging calm:

“Throughout the course of this election, National Council of Jewish Women advocates across the country have done incredible work promoting and protecting the vote. Though voting closed yesterday, this election season will not be over until every vote is counted.

“Due to Covid-19, nearly everything is different this year, and that includes the election. It is taking longer to count votes and that is part of the democratic process. Election officials are accurately counting and verifying ballots and ensuring that our democracy is working. Every vote must be counted, no matter if sent in by mail, dropped off at a secure location, or cast in-person.

“A core principle of American democracy is that we choose our leaders – our leaders do not choose their voters. We must refrain from declaring the next president until all the votes are counted and every American’s voice is heard. We urge patience from all Americans, including the candidates.

“This election will have immense consequences for the lives of women, children, and families across the country. It is important that we get it right, even if that takes time. A fair and complete election is worth the wait.

“The Jewish people have faced many challenges throughout history, but we have endured. Though we may need to wait a little longer this year for the final results of the election, we will be patient, we will persevere, we will endure.”
